York is made for a weekend away for two. The centre is small enough to walk, there is a lot packed inside the walls, and you can fill two days without ever getting in the car. This plan starts from our flat in the Skeldergate area, but it works from anywhere in the centre. Walking times are from the Skeldergate area and are approximate.
Friday evening: arrive and wander
Park once and leave the car. If you are driving, check our guide to parking in York city centre first, as it can be the most stressful part of the trip. Drop your bags, then walk up to Micklegate, about 6 minutes away, for a drink. Micklegate has some of York's best-known pubs and bars, and it is a good place to start an evening before dinner in the centre.
Saturday: walls, Minster and the Shambles
Start on the walls. They are the longest medieval town walls in England, 3.4 kilometres in all, and the walkway is free and open from 8am until dusk. From Skeldergate you can join at Baile Hill and walk to Micklegate Bar, or do the whole circuit in about two hours. Our York walls walk guide has the full route.
Come down at Bootham Bar for York Minster, about 13 minutes' walk from the flat if you go straight there. It is one of the great things to do in York, UK, and it is worth booking a sightseeing ticket online and giving it a couple of hours. Afterwards, wander down Stonegate and Petergate to the Shambles, the medieval street of overhanging timber buildings. The Shambles Market and Shambles Food Court next to it are open every day from 9am to 5pm, which makes them an easy lunch stop.
In the evening, the York restaurants scene is spread around the centre, with Micklegate, Fossgate and the streets around the Minster all good places to look. Book ahead on a Saturday, especially in December.
Sunday: river and a slow finish
Have a late breakfast, then walk along the River Ouse, which runs right past the Skeldergate area. Clifford's Tower is about 8 minutes on foot, and the walk up gives a good view across the rooftops. If you have time before you head home, the Museum Gardens are a quiet place for a last stroll.
Things to do in York for couples
- Walk a stretch of the walls at golden hour, before the gates close at dusk.
- Take a ghost walk after dark. York has several, and most start in the centre in the evening.
- Spend a rainy afternoon at York Castle Museum or the Yorkshire Museum in Museum Gardens.
- Get lost in the snickelways, the narrow medieval alleys between the main streets.
- Visit in late November or December for the Christmas market. See our guide to staying for the York Christmas Market.
Where to stay
For a weekend on foot, stay inside the walls. Our 1 bedroom flat for two in the Skeldergate area has secure dedicated parking, a kitchen and Wi-Fi, and a 2-night minimum stay, which suits a Friday to Sunday break. Send us your dates and book direct.
