York Christmas Market returns on Thursday 12 November and runs until Monday 21 December 2026. Make It York, which organises the market, confirmed the dates in August, and Visit York lists the same dates on its official Christmas pages. With less than three weeks to go, now is a good time to plan a festive break in the city.
The market is open six days a week, Wednesday to Monday, from 10.30am to 7pm. The one exception is the final day, Monday 21 December, when the stalls close earlier, at 5pm. On Tuesdays the market is closed for a weekly rest day. This is new for 2026: City of York Council is trialling the rest day following a decision by its Executive on Tuesday 12 May.
A closed market does not mean a quiet city. Make It York says York's shops, attractions, cafés, restaurants and events stay open throughout the week, and the historic Shambles Market and Shambles Food Court are open every day from 9am to 5pm as usual. A Tuesday can be a calmer day to explore the Minster, the city walls and the snickelways before heading back to the stalls on Wednesday.
If you are travelling by car, it helps to know how access works. On market days there are restrictions on vehicles within the footstreet area, in line with recommended anti-terrorism measures, with arrangements similar to last year. On Tuesdays, while the stalls are closed, the Goodramgate, King's Square and Colliergate loop is in operation for Blue Badge holders.
Tips for your visit
- Weekends in late November and December are the busiest times, so a midweek stay from Wednesday gives you market days with more breathing space.
- Plan any Tuesday around the city's museums, shops and restaurants rather than the stalls.
- Visit the market on Monday 21 December before 5pm if you are coming on the last day.
- Check the official Visit York Christmas page for opening times and travel information before you set off.
